How to Read THC Labels

Simple label basics for flower, edibles, drinks, vapes, and concentrates.

Cannabis labels can look surprisingly complicated at first. One package shows THC percentages, another talks about milligrams, and somewhere in the middle there are dates, terpene names, batch numbers, and terms like live or cured.

The good news is that most labels repeat the same core information. Once you understand what those sections actually mean, comparing products becomes much easier - whether you're shopping for flower, edibles, drinks, vapes, or concentrates.

This guide breaks down the label details you’re most likely to see and explains what they actually mean when you’re standing in a dispensary deciding between products.

THC Per Serving

This number matters most for products that are divided into portions - especially edibles, drinks, capsules, tinctures, and dissolvables.

THC per serving tells you how much THC is contained in one suggested serving, not necessarily the entire package.

For example, a cannabis drink might contain 100 mg THC total while listing 10 mg THC per serving.

When comparing products, always check whether the THC number refers to one serving or the entire package.

THC Per Package

THC per package shows the total amount of THC inside the entire product.

You’ll most commonly see this on gummies, beverages, chocolates, and other multi-serving products.

For example, a package of 10 gummies may contain 100 mg THC total while each gummy contains 10 mg.

Serving potency and package potency are not the same thing.

THC Percentage

Flower, concentrates, and many vape products usually display THC as a percentage instead of milligrams.

A flower package may show 24% THC. A concentrate might show 75% THC.

That percentage estimates how much of the product is made up of THC by weight.

Higher THC doesn’t automatically mean a better product. Terpenes, freshness, product type, and personal preference all matter too.

THC is important - but it’s rarely the whole story.

CBD and Other Cannabinoids

Many labels list more than THC.

You may see CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC, THCA, CBDA, and other cannabinoids depending on the product.

These numbers don’t automatically predict exactly how a product will feel, but they can help explain the overall profile.

Cannabis labels have become more detailed because people increasingly want to understand what’s inside rather than relying only on strain names.

Terpenes

Terpenes are aromatic compounds that influence how cannabis smells and tastes.

Common examples include:

- Limonene - citrus

Terpenes help explain why two products with similar THC percentages may smell, taste, or feel different.

Harvest Date

This section matters most for flower.

The harvest date tells you when the cannabis plant was harvested before drying and processing.

Harvest date alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Drying, curing, packaging, and storage all affect freshness.

Manufacturing Date

This usually refers to when the final product was produced, processed, or packaged.

Use By Date vs Expiration Date

A use by date, best by date, or similar label may reflect manufacturer guidance, inventory practices, regulatory requirements, or quality control.

That doesn’t automatically mean the product becomes expired overnight.

Products that truly expire under state requirements are generally removed from sale.

Some products that pass a recommended date while remaining compliant may appear at discounted pricing.

If you’re unsure, ask your budtender what the date means for that specific product.

Batch Number

A batch number links the product to a specific production and testing run.

It helps support testing records, traceability, recalls, and quality control.

Most customers never use it directly, but it’s an important part of regulated cannabis tracking.

Live vs Cured

You’ll most commonly see this distinction on concentrates and vape products.

Live products are generally made from fresh frozen cannabis. Cured products begin with dried and cured material.

Live products often aim to preserve more aroma and terpene expression.

Live doesn’t automatically mean better - it simply refers to a different starting material and process.

What to Look at First

For edibles and drinks:

- THC per serving
- THC per package
- Serving size
- Use by date

For flower:

- THC percentage
- Terpenes (if listed)
- Harvest date
- Packaging date

For vapes and concentrates:

- THC percentage
- Cannabinoid profile
- Terpene profile
- Live vs cured
- Manufacturing date

For all products:

- Batch number
- Storage instructions
- Serving guidance
- Required warnings
