That doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong. Even plants from the same genetic line can turn out differently.
The basic idea is simple: genetics give a plant a range of possibilities, while phenotype is how those genetics actually show up in an individual plant. The growing environment also plays a role.
What Is a Cannabis Phenotype?
A phenotype is the set of characteristics expressed by an individual plant. With cannabis, that can include much more than appearance.
Things such as bud structure, color, aroma, resin production, flowering time, cannabinoid levels, and terpene composition can all be part of a plant's phenotype.
A useful way to think about it is this:
Genotype is what the plant's genetics contain.
Phenotype is how those genetics are expressed.
The environment then influences how the plant develops.
Genotype vs. Phenotype
These two terms are easy to mix up.
The genotype is the genetic information inherited from the plant's parents. In simple terms, it describes what the plant is capable of expressing.
The phenotype is what you actually see in a particular plant.
Imagine growing several seeds from the same cross. They're siblings, not identical copies. One might be shorter and more citrus-forward, while another might grow taller, stay greener, and produce more resin. Both can still come from the same genetic line.
Why Can the Same Strain Produce Different Plants?

And the winner isn't always the plant with the highest THC.
A slightly lower-THC plant might be much more interesting because it has exceptional flavor, heavy resin production, better structure, higher yield, or some other trait the grower wants to preserve.
What Happens When a Grower Finds a Great Phenotype?
Once a grower finds a plant worth keeping, they can preserve its genetics by taking cuttings and producing clones.
A clone is intended to carry the same genotype as the plant it came from. This makes it possible to keep growing a particular selection instead of starting over with seeds and getting a new mix of genetic traits each time.
There is one important catch: genetically identical plants don't always produce identical flower.
Light, temperature, humidity, nutrition, irrigation, growing medium, plant stress, and harvest timing can all affect how a plant develops. This is one example of what is known as genotype-by-environment interaction, or G × E.
So even two clones can end up looking or testing somewhat differently when grown under different conditions.
Phenotype vs. Chemotype
Phenotype and chemotype are related, but they're not the same thing.
Phenotype describes the broader characteristics of the plant.
Chemotype refers specifically to its chemical composition.
Cannabis has historically been grouped into chemotypes based on cannabinoid ratios, such as THC-dominant or THC/CBD types. Modern lab testing can give us a much more detailed picture, including THC, CBD, CBG, CBC, THCV, and individual terpenes.
This means two plants can look almost identical while having noticeably different chemical profiles.
Can Different Phenotypes Smell and Taste Different?
Absolutely.
Different phenotypes can produce different amounts and combinations of aromatic compounds. One plant from a genetic line might lean heavily toward citrus, while another may express more pepper, earth, or herbal notes.
Terpenes are part of that story. Limonene can contribute citrus aromas, caryophyllene brings pepper and spice, and myrcene is associated with earthy and herbal notes. Other volatile compounds also contribute to the overall smell, so terpenes aren't the entire explanation.

Why Does Some Cannabis Turn Purple?
Purple cannabis is another example of phenotypic variation.
The purple, red, and blue colors found in some cannabis plants are associated with anthocyanins, a group of plant pigments. Genetics play an important role, but environmental conditions and plant maturity can also affect how much color develops.
And no, purple flower isn't automatically stronger.
Color can make a bud look incredible, but it doesn't tell you its THC level or overall quality.
Can Different Phenotypes Have Different THC Levels?
Yes. Plants from the same genetic line can produce different cannabinoid profiles.
Even a selected phenotype can test somewhat differently from one harvest to another. Cultivation conditions, plant maturity, harvest timing, sampling, post-harvest handling, and laboratory testing can all play a part.
That's why a strain doesn't really have one permanent THC percentage.
If you see a strain listed online as 24% THC, that's describing a particular test result or an average from available samples. It isn't a specification that every plant carrying that name will produce 24% THC.
The lab results for the actual batch are much more useful.

A strain and a phenotype aren't the same thing.
A strain — or cultivar, which is often the more precise botanical term — refers to a named genetic variety or cultivated line.
A phenotype is a particular expression of that genetic line.

If one selection turns out to be especially desirable and is preserved, it may eventually become known as a particular cultivar or selection in its own right.
Why the Same Strain Can Be Different at Two Dispensaries
This is where everything comes together.
You can buy the same strain name from two different producers and get noticeably different flower.
The genetics may not actually be identical. The growers may have selected different phenotypes. The plants may have been grown under completely different conditions. Even the same grower can see differences between harvests.
Then there is everything that happens after harvest — drying, curing, storage, and age.
So the strain name is useful, but it doesn't tell you the whole story.
What Should Cannabis Consumers Look At?
If you're trying to figure out whether you'll actually like a product, the strain name is only one piece of the puzzle.
Look at the flower itself when possible. Check the color, structure, trichome coverage, and overall condition.
Pay attention to the smell. Aroma can tell you things that the strain name doesn't.
Check the actual cannabinoid results for the batch you're buying rather than relying on an old THC number from a strain database.
Look at the terpene information when it's available.
And don't overlook the grower. If you consistently like the way one cultivator grows and selects its flower, that can become just as useful to you as remembering a particular strain name.
Why Phenotypes Make Cannabis More Interesting
Phenotypic variation is one of the reasons cannabis has such a huge range of aromas, flavors, colors, structures, resin levels, and chemical profiles.
Breeders take that natural variation and select the plants they find most interesting. A lot of recognizable cannabis cultivars exist because someone grew a group of plants and found one that was worth keeping.
In other words, sometimes the whole story starts with a grower looking at a room full of plants and thinking:
“This particular one is worth keeping.”

So why doesn't the same strain always seem exactly the same?
Because the strain name is only the starting point.
Genetics establish a range of possibilities. Individual plants express those genetics differently. Breeders select particular phenotypes, growers preserve them through cloning, and the growing environment affects how those plants develop.
That's why two products with the same strain name aren't guaranteed to look, smell, or test exactly alike.
For consumers, the actual flower, grower, batch, cannabinoid profile, terpene profile, and your own experience can tell you much more than the strain name or THC percentage alone.
